Working the Net

This happened some time during the fifties on

board the side trawler Solborg IS 260 from

Isafjordur. Mr. Pall Palsson was the captain and

the catch was abundant that day. The deck was

covered in fish flopping around and the crew was

busy emptying the net and gutting the fish.

Captain Pall was set on deploying the trawl again

and thought the crew was rather slow in getting

the fish out of the net and moving it off the deck

into the hold.

One of the seamen, Lindal Magnusson (called

Dalli), was standing on deck and gutting fish like

a man possessed. The captain now took off one

of his shoes and threw it at another member of

the crew, who he though was moving rather slowly

at his work. The skipper missed and the shoe

landed in the pile of fish next to Dalli.

"It is amazing what manner of rubbish gets into

the trawl", then said Dalli, as he took up the shoe

and threw it overboard.
