I Should Have Been Dead 3 Years Ago...

It was November 8th 2006, my brother, his wife, our friend Mike and myself decided to take one last trip up to Strawberry Reservoir, a high mountain lake that has some of the best fishing in Utah. It was early November and for those of you who don’t live hear generally means that it was COLD! And it was. This was our last opportunity to take a trip up to Strawberry because there was a huge snow storm that was supposed to be rolling in that night, and the lake would likely be beginning to freeze over within a week or two.
Our Trip started out great, the skies were clear, the air was crisp, the water was smooth as glass and the prospect of catching a lot of fish seemed promising….
That’s the start of the story, and to keep this blog post short, I’ll skip ahead to the part about why I should be dead.
About 4 hours after the trip started, we were out in the very middle of the lake, about 2.5 miles away from the closest shoreline. It was around 11:30 in the afternoon, the fishing had been amazing, so amazing that we did not notice that the wind had picked up, and that the increased wind had began to create white cap waves… By the time I noticed, it was far too late. Water had begun splashing over the bow of the boat, filling the front of the boat with water. With each wave that dumped more water in the boat, the front of the boat sank more and more. Before we knew it, or could do anything about it, the boat just sank…
The Water was 41 Degrees, The Shore was 2.5 miles away, the waves that had just sunk the boat were beating on us, making it nearly impossible to swim… And scariest of all (fortunately for me I did not know it at the time, unfortunately for my brother, he did) in 41 degree water, you are dead if you don’t make it out within 30 Minutes…….
If you want to hear the rest of the story, as I described in in a Video presentation I did last year. Check out “
My Name is Kimball Roundy and I Should Be Dead
” Now.
So, I’m posting this today to tell you about a decision I have made. I made it late last week, not remembering that today was November 8th, and when I realized what day it was it made my decision and goal that much more important.

When I met my wife, I weighed 180 Pounds. I was in the best shape of my life by far. Due to a number of factors (Snow boarding accident that destroyed my knee, medication I was taking that had weight gain side effects, starting my business and spending every waking minute in front of the computer etc) a year and a half later, I had balooned up to 280 pounds!
This played 2 different roles in that boating accident, one minor, and one MAJOR.
The minor role, was that I was the “Fat Guy” in the front of the boat, that was weighing it down, and making it easier for the waves to come over the edge… Did my weight cause the accident? No. Did it play a minor role? Yes, for sure.
So ever since the accident that has kinda been eating at me, in the back of my mind, I have been “wanting” but not fully COMMITTED to losing this weight. There have been a few times that I have been pretty good at going to the gym, eating better etc. I got down to 245 pounds at one point, but since then I have creeped back up slowly to 278 Pounds (Last Night).
The MAJOR Role that it played in the accident is that that much extra weight effectively made me a “Polar Bear”. It for SURE played a role in saving my life. I was and (NOT FOR LONG) Still am, WELL INSULATED ;-)
On a side note, and the main thing that helps me not beat myself up too much about being the “Fat guy in the front of the boat” is that it is my belief that God made me gain all that weight, because he knew I needed to be a Polar Bear…
So, with all that History setting the stage for my “Decision”, here it is, I am committed to lose 68 Pounds. And I want your help doing it.
I am so committed, and want to have a little “Skin in the game”, that I will pay $1,000 to the person who is first to hold me accountable for missing a day working out until I reach my goal of being down to 210 pounds. And I will pay $200 more if someone you tell about this is the one that calls me out on it.
Here’s how this is going to work, If you are interested in being one of my “virtual trainers” and holding me accountable for my daily workout routine, and be eligible for the $1,000 or $200 then you must do the following:
1. Leave a comment on this post, letting me know that you are up for the job. Tell me WHO Sent you Here, Who told you about this page so they can win the $200 if you win the $1,000 (Neither of you ever will because I am Committed! ;-)
2. Follow me on Twitter, and/or Facebook (

3. Post a link to this blog post on your Profile on Twitter or Facebook. (Here is the link to it: “http://kimballroundy.com/41-degrees/41-degrees”)
4. ENCOURAGE ME! Cheer me on like a good personal trainer would :) (The point is NOT to hope I fail so you can get paid, the point is to HELP me ;-)
I Should Have Been Dead 3 Years Ago...
So, it’s November 8th 2009. 3 years ago, according to all the laws of Science, I should have died. My Brother did, his wife did, but for a number of reasons that I’m not going to get into in this post, God decided to keep me alive…
