The moaning grew louder, emitting eerily from the forest walls. Ti wasn't so certain anymore that the noise was the sound of lovers, as the area was a cove for kindling romance. Had he not known better, he would have sworn the sound was the sound of a ghost!
The Lace Curtain
The graveyard lay in the misted distance where one walks, visible only to Kayla who watches through The Lace Curtain....
The graveyard lay in the misted distance. Kayla fingered the dingy lace curtain with high anticipation of catching a glimpse of the apparition that had appeared nightly for the last thirty days.
It had began on the first of the month. This month. This unusually hot and blustery October month.
The Crying Veil
Unrequited love gets even...
Anna smoothed her hands over the lace of the beautiful wedding gown. She had purchased it for a song. Imagine, a $6,000 gown for one-tenth the price! And the shoppe owner had been most urgent in completing the sale, as if Anna might have changed her mind.
The Widow Maker
The city lay shrouded in the distance, looming like a fragile virgin clothed in white. The year was 2785.
Vincent’s keen eyesight cut through the fog, singeing over the towering steel buildings like a guided laser. He was searching for something lost, something that he would probably never reclaim.
"Master, are we going to be out in this nasty stuff much longer?"

From Gerard - 01/13/06 - Subject GHOST
Hey I found your site in the search for what Ghosts exactly are.
Let me tell you what I saw, I live with my mom in an house that was built in the 40's, in Hasbrouck Heights NJ. The house belonged to an old woman Mrs. Prudon and her husband was already dead when my family bought the house. My father had a heart attack and died 11 years later in a hospital in 1995.
Fredey and me and the Kite
Fredey and me and the Kite
Although the story I am about to tell you happened a long time ago, I can remember every detail of what happened to me and my best friend Fredeh on that eventful and bright tropical sunny day at Kukuhill when we went kite flying.Fredeh was my best friend and we grew up together in the Gold Coast.now Ghana. We were the same age and height and were often mistaken to be brothers. We both came from loving families and we always knew how far we could go from our houses.to play. That is as long as there was no one around.we roamed all over the place since apart from another house our two houses were the only houses for miles around. But we were not alowed to wonder very farWe had an invisible boundry that we were not allowed to cross.I was the oldest boy in my family and Fredeh was the youngest boy in his family. We played together everyday and everyday was an exciting adventure.
Ghosthouses
Sound of ghostly telephone ringing.
Mandy:"Hello Â…Â…Â…Â…Â… you are through toFreephone Ghosthouses, Mandy speaking, how can I help You?"
George:"Yes, hello, it's George here, I'm a bit nervous - a first time caller - I'm always one for a good laugh, you know a nice comedy or comic drama but you are not having me on are you? Can youreallyfind me a haunt?"
Mandy: "Naturally! That's what we're here for. Ghosthouses is a service that's been established for hundreds of years to provide advice and guidance to select embodied and disembodied life forms seeking desirable abodes."
Just the Job
"I'm afraid you may never have a desk job again. Employers prefer younger people! They shouldn't - but they do. You must be more flexible".
The man at the unemployment office had looked embarrassed. He'd still got his job. Age for age, responsibility for responsibility - the job was the only difference between us.But it was a big difference.
In a way I really missed my desk? It was comfortable. It had been part of me for so many years. It had brought in money - just enough - to keep things going. But now it was over. Chapter closed. I was on the scrap heap. Dumped.
Forever Flying Free
'It's funny how the idea for a short story arrives! I was caught in a traffic jam on a early Friday afternoon and found myself watching through my mirror a couple (the hero and heroine) in the car behind'.
'It looked like a lunch time office date that had gone a bit wrong. He was a lot older and was much keener on the idea of romance than she'.
'From this observed mini drama came thoughts of ghostly love and mystery and'Forever Flying Free'- although, in retrospect, it's hard to connect the two'.
The Curse of the Yeth Hounds.'
I sat on Thorncombe Barrow, above the village of Bicknoller in the Quantock Hills in Somerset wondering if they would come tonight. I was waiting for the appearance of the Yeth Hounds, those strange ghostly creatures whom I believed had laid their curse on me many years before.
I first heard about the Yeth Hounds when I was a teenager. A gang of us had gone into the Carew Arms in the village of Crowcombe, which was frequented back in the sixties manly by hill farmers and old shepherds. Earthy men descended from generations of West Somerset folk who lived, worked and breathed the air of the Quantocks, men whose very souls were born out of the combes and covers on the hills. Men who knew no other life, nor had any desire to.
AN ITALIAN DREAM
Mary Marshall was 36 today. She was contentedly single - if someone special came along, fine; if not, also fine! Children would be nice, but if it didn't happen, it would not be the end of the world.
She felt her life was a bit mediocre, but so were those of her friends. Married or single, they went to work, came home, did the usual mundane things, and life sort of doddled along. She did not feel that she was missing anything, but sometimes, on birthdays for example, she wondered if perhaps there was something she should be missing!
She strolled along to Finnegans, the local supermarket, where she was a checkout girl, still deep in thought. Someone nudged her, and broke her train of thought. Startled, she turned, to see her friend, June Parry. They usually met near this particular spot; June also worked at Finnegans.
THE VISITOR
er>THE VISITOR
Amanda and David Trenby and their three children Marc, Emma and Penny had recently moved into a Victorian five bedroom cottage in the village of Oakley, North West of Oxford. David had recently taken up a partnership with a firm of solicitors in Oxford and this had initiated their move.
After the family had left for work and school Amanda decided to unpack the two remaining crates of crockery. Perhaps it would take her mind off the strange feeling of not being welcome in her new house. How could she possibly explain to the family how she felt? When they had all settled in so well.
The Man in the Mist
Stephen stubbed out the cigarette butt and immediately lit another from my fireplace. This was something else new. The Stephen that I knew would never smoke.
He sat back in the armchair, took a long draw, and exhaled slowly, relishing in the pattern of swirling smoke lit up by the fire. 'Yes, I know I haven't been in contact for a long, long time. I'm sorry, I really am. But there has been a good reason.'
Since I had known him at college, his appearance and manner had changed drastically, and unfortunately not for the better. His athletic figure and strong cheekbones had wasted away over the years, leaving a somewhat shriveled impression, and a mess of uneven stubble shadowed his features. He used to be very well dressed, a far cry from the faded, torn jeans and jacket he now wore. It was probably just the way he held himself, but when I first opened the door to him, he had looked much smaller than the towering rugby player that I had once known.
Dead Trial
Sergeant Walter Eaton stood at the Police Station reception desk busying himself with whatever it is that Police do when they're manning reception, when a person literally walked in through the door.
Now, to clarify, the door was never opened and there was no gap for anybody to climb in through.
He actually passed through the wood without causing any damage at all.
The man walked over to Walter and said: "I'm here to report a murder."
A True Ghost Story
Below is an unedited true story of a visit to Bachelor's Grove submitted to us through email by Ryan Monty. Thanks so much, Ryan - this is a great account that helps verify that this is indeed a very haunted place!
Hi Folks,
I recently took a renewed interest in the occult when talking with my friend about some strange experiences he had while visiting Brazil. I came across your website today and I find it very interesting. And so, I have had one indisputable paranormal experience I'd like to share with you and also send you the pics, which (in my opinion) are sort of amazing.
My experience took place at Bachelor's Grove cemetery here near Chicago where I live back in July of 01. I'm sure you know about Bachelor's Grove, since it's in your database, so I won't explain anything about the location.
New York Hauntings
Brunswick
Forest Park Cemetery
Forest Park Cemetery, also known as Forest Hills Cemetery and Pinewoods Cemetery to the locals is a fairly well-known New York haunted site, mostly because of a 1980 article published in Life Magazine that said it was one of the top ten haunted places in the United States.
Because of financial difficulties over the years, the cemetery has fallen into a disgraceful state of disrepair.
New Hampshire Hauntings
Nashua
Gilson Road Cemetery
If you happen to find yourself in southern New Hampshire at some point soon, do stop in at Gilson Road Cemetery and take a look around, day or night.
This small cemetery has been carefully studied by many knowledgeable ghost hunters, virtually all of whom detect a palpable energy at the site.
Don't go alone, especially at night because people are prone to freaking out here, with many reports of them hearing or feeling a "get out of here" kind of energy that they feel compelled to obey.
Nebraska Hauntings
Ball Cemetery
Ball Cemetery is an old graveyard in Springfield, Nebraska that is fairly isolated and that really doesn't have a very interesting history - except maybe for genealogists looking for dead relatives.
There is no history of violence or sudden deaths connected to this cemetery that we are aware of, and at first, we nearly discounted it as a valid haunting.
Montana Hauntings
Chico Hot Springs Lodge & Ranch
In May, 1986, two night watchmen witnessed the apparition of a "Lady in White" hovering over a piano in the third floor lounge of this hotel.
They believed that this apparition belonged to Percie Knowles, the wife of the man who built the hotel in 1900.
Only her upper body materialized, and for several minutes she stared directly at the two guards, giving them enough time to grab a camera from a nearby table and snap a photograph.
Other guests had reported her ghostly apparition, but this was the first time the Lady in White had ever been photographed.
Missouri Hauntings
Lemp Mansion
The Lemp Mansion history is basically a story of rags to riches and back to rags again.
Add to this a family of unstable, eccentric individuals, and you have the makings for a real haunted house.
Without going through a history that can be found anywhere on the internet, the Lemps were a family who made their fortune brewing beer.
Indeed, the Lemp brand was as well known in its heyday as Miller or Budweiser are today.
Mississippi Hauntings
McRaven Home
The McRaven Home is arguably the most haunted house in Mississippi.
Owned today by Mr. Leland French - who for a refreshing change freely admits to the house being haunted - the McRaven Home is the site of just about every type of paranormal phenomena there is, including orbs, mists, sounds, smells, and full-figure apparitions.
Minnesota Hauntings
Duluth
Glensheen Mansion
The Glensheen story is one of the most complex and interesting hauntings we have researched to date.
Chester Congdon built the house, which was finished in 1908 (and appraised at that time as being worth $865,000).
Chester's daughter, Elizabeth inherited the house, and after her death it was turned over to the University of Minnesota.
Through the years, it has been kept in pristine condition, and in many opinions it is the most beautiful home in the United States.
Michigan Hauntings
Soop Cemetery
This active Michigan cemetery is well-known for it's ghostly apparitions, including orbs, vortexes, voices, cold spots, shadowy figures, and various full apparitions.
The grave of a witch whose name was apparently Elizabeth is located here somewhere.
Massachusets Hauntings
Hammond Castle
Hammond Castle is majestic Medieval-type structure built on the rocky shores of Gloucester, completed in 1929.
It was the home and workplace of a wealthy, eccentric genius named John Hammond, who was one of the great inventors of our time.
During his lifetime, Hammond traveled widely, outfitting his castle with incredible centuries-old furnishings and relics.
Maryland Hauntings
Point Lookout State Park & Lighthouse
No compilation of haunted areas would be complete without a close look at the Point Lookout State Park & Lighthouse in southern Maryland.
This is an area that is teeming with paranormal activity, with every type of sight, sound, and energy known to ghost researchers.
This fact that the entire area is haunted is acknowledged by the Coast Guard, the Navy, and the State of Maryland.
The rangers and workers in and around the park will talk to you freely about the things that go on there, and most even have personal encounters that they will share.
Maine Hauntings
South of Georgetown
Seguin Island Light
Lighthouses tend to be lonely, desolate, eerie places, so it's no wonder that many of the old lighthouses that dot our shores have legends of long-time ghosts and hauntings, and the Seguin Island Light is no exception.
The Seguin Island Light was first built in 1797.
The structure has was replaced in 1820, and again with the present structure in 1857.
The light was manually monitored until it was automated in 1985.
It is the highest elevated lighthouse in Maine, standing a little over 180 feet above sea level.
Louisiana Hauntings
St. Francisville
Myrtle's Plantation
This Louisiana bed and breakfast has been called the most haunted house in America.
Although we don't agree with that assessment, there are certainly enough reliable reports of apparitions, sounds, and other strange phenomena at this site to warrant a closer look.
Kansas Hauntings
Lawrence
Eldridge Hotel
The Eldridge Hotel is the only business in Lawrence, Kansas that has been doing business since before Kansas was admitted to the Union.
The building itself has been destroyed and rebuilt (with many associated deaths) several times in the last hundred and fifty years or so, with the five story building today built in 1926 and reopened in its present form in 1986.
Iowa Hauntings
Iowa City
The Black Angel at Oakland Cemetery
Ask anyone in Iowa City about the Black Angel, and you will hear a different spooky story from each one, mostly revolving around touching or defacing the statue and subsequently suffering injury or death.
Indiana Hauntings
Stepp Cemetery
Of all the hauntings in Indiana, Stepp Cemetery is surely one of the most intriguing, not to mention one of the most famous.
Located in The Morgan-Monroe State Forest.
This cemetery is very isolated, making a visit there quite spooky, even in daylight.
The old cemetery is gated, and one has to get out of the car and walk to get to the few graves left, which are crumbling from age and neglect.
Illinois Hauntings
Chicago
Bachelors Grove Cemetery
This desecrated graveyard, established in 1864, was named after the many unmarried men that once lived in this vicinity and has gained the reputation for being the most haunted cemetery in the Chicago area. Apparently this site was used as a dumping grounds for the victims murdered by the 1920's gangsters, and as you look around you quickly realize how poorly treated and abused this site actually is. There are only a few remaining monuments left - most of them on the eastern side - while all of the western side is empty except for a single marker left in the Southwest corner. The cemetery was abandoned in 1965.
Idaho Hauntings
Idaho City
Boot Hill Cemetery
Idaho City is a well-preserved old west gold rush town with an interesting, though often violent past.
Vigilantism was common here, and the townspeople were quick to hang lawbreakers without benefit of a trial.
At the height of the gold boom, the town sported 41 saloons, so one can only imagine what went on in that town full of armed men and liquor.
Nearby Boot Hill Cemetery is a fascinating
Georgia Hauntings
Ghostly phenomena in Chickamauga runs the gamut of the supernatural spectrum, including sightings of orbs, and vortexes, ghostly figures, glowing eyes, rustling bushes with no apparent cause, odd sounds, gunshots (no hunting is allowed anywhere near this large area), and occasional disembodied voices. Many who have visited the site report a very strong feeling of uneasiness and of being watched.
A full figure of a woman in what appears to be a white wedding gown has been reported by several people, and it is assumed that her lover was killed in the bloody battle.
Florida Hauntings
Cassadaga
Cassadaga Spiritual Camp
http://www.netsaga.is/media/files/LateNightEarlymorn.mp3
Cassadaga is called "The South's Oldest Spiritual Community" and is believed to be a vortex or portal site - where the spirit plane and the earth plane are much closer than usual - very similar to the famed Sedona in Arizona.
This is a tiny, quaint little town with small, neat 1920's style houses, most with small gardens of herbs and flowers growing in the front yards.
The residents include some of the best psychics, clairvoyants, and healers in the country, and most of the houses have small shingles advertising the services that each particular person has to offer.
Even skeptics who visit here and get readings come away with stories of really memorable and pertinent experiences.
DC Hauntings
Washington DC
The White House
The White House is without a doubt the most famous haunted house in America.
But is there anything to all the hype?
We have all heard the Abe Lincoln stories, but deep in the White House archives there are undoubtedly many more fascinating footnotes.
Unfortunately, we have to dig deep these days to get new information on sightings.
Delaware Hauntings
Dover
The Governor's Mansion - "Woodburn"
By far, the most famous haunted place in Delaware is the Governor's mansion, called Woodburn.
The house was built in 1790 and served at one point as a stop on the underground railway for escaping slaves via a tunnel dug from the basement to the St. Jones River.
Ghostly sightings have occurred here for hundreds of years, and include an elderly man who may be the original owner of the house, a man with an old-time powdered wig who seems to like vintage wines, a small female child, and a slave who was accidentally hung when he got caught in the branches of an old poplar tree in the yard.
Connecticut Huntings
Easton
Union Cemetery
Union Cemetery is one of the most famous and most investigated haunted cemeteries, not only in Connecticut, but in the entire USA.
This fame is mostly due to sightings of
"The White Lady,"
a manifestation of a woman in a white nightgown and bonnet who appears unexpectedly in the roadway near the cemetery.
Many reports of this apparition come from very reliable sources, including police and firefighters who have reported "running over" the woman, but finding no damage whatsoever to their vehicles.
Arkansas Hauntings
Eureka Springs
Crescent Hotel
The Crescent Hotel, built in the late 1800's, has a long list of supernatural phenomena to it's credit.
It has become rather famous for it's paranormal activity, and has been featured on Unsolved Mysteries because of the many reports of odd experiences reported from within it's walls.
Many attribute the high activity at this site to the pure, energizing spring water that flows under the building.
Colorado Hauntings
Central City
Masonic Cemetery
The Masonic Cemetery is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a woman wearing a black satin dress.
She is seen placing blue columbine flowers on the grave of young John Edward Cameron, who died unexpectedly on November 1, 1887 of heart paralysis.
This beautiful lady in black appears twice a year - on April 5 and November 1 - and places the flowers on Cameron's grave.
The town residents, who have been well aware of her from the beginning, originally had no idea who she was, and by 1899, she was well known locally as a phantom.
California Hauntings
Long Beach

My trip to the Queen Mary was not just fun but historical as well.
I wasn’t sure what to expect upon my arrival, I had only heard stories about the magnitude of this ship.
With its vast decks and blast from the past interior, I knew immediately that this was going to be a memorable experience.
As we arrived we caught an elevator ride with the well known and well respected psychic investigator, Peter James in which we were to take the Haunted Encounters tour with later that evening.
Peter James is known for his contributions on the T.V. show Sightings and has dedicated his life to ghost research.
Alabama Hauntings
Birmingham
Sloss Furnaces
The Sloss Furnaces are undoubtedly the most famous and haunted place in the central Alabama area.
The story here is that for years a cruel foreman on the midnight shift at the furnaces worked his men relentlessly under grueling conditions, with temperatures often rising above 120 degrees.
This resulted in an unusual number of deaths on that shift, causing the company to eventually do away with it altogether.
Haunted Areas By State
Haunted Areas By State
![]()
As one might imagine, cataloging ghosts and hauntings by state is a big job. With the world as old as it is and with tragedies and deaths every single day on virtually every street corner at some point in time, the world is a haunted place indeed.
Our purpose for this section is therefore not to catalog every single ghost story that ever happened in every state, but to try to collect the best and the most well-documented cases and include travel directions and instructions on how to experience them and what to look for when you get there.
Spooky Treehouse
Spooky Treehouse
Ok this is kind of a long story. It happened when I was on vacation from Chicago, visiting my cousins in California.
My cousins have a huge backyard, and have a basketball court in it.
DAWSON'S HALLOWEEN
A Ghost story
It was 1920, shortly after the Great war, when the once noble hall of Carbrook had become well established as a
'common beer house'
it one day found itself short of a landlord.
THE SECRET OF A CARVING
Above the fireplace in the Old Oak Room at Carbrook is a carving.
It depicts the figure of a medieval priest stepping upon the figure of a naked woman;
with the curious distinction that the woman appears to have grown a tail.
The accepted explanation is that it is a nun who has fallen into disgrace by succumbing to fleshly temptation and the motto associated with this carving is:
"Wisdom trampling upon ignorance"
SIX TROOPERS
Some distance from old Carbrook hall on a dark frosty morning a small light could be seen flickering warmly in the tiny window of a small cottage nestling in the gloomy shadows of a clump of oak trees.
A faint wisp of wood smoke swirled from it's chimney set in the roughly thatched roof.
The smoke barely moved, so still was the early morning air and none but the faintest breeze was seen to do more than make a ripple on the deep sea of icy mist which seemed to carpet the entire common and shimmer in the waning moonlight.
Inside the cottage, an elderly couple, Tom and Bess Webster, anxiously waited for the sun to rise.
It was winter, 1644.
