John first saw Violet nearly 20 years ago. Right after he had returned to the country, he had taken a jaunt east of the mountains to meet some people he knew. On his way back to town, he stopped for a while at the greenhouse-restaurant Eden in Hveragerdi to get a cup of coffee.

Later he had walked out to continue on into town. It was then that he met Violet. She just bumped into him, wearing flapping pumps, a rippling white shirt and jeans.

Blond hair fell down her back in a thick braid that flopped about with her movements. She was with a young man, and they had their arms around each other like lovers.

John had stopped and stared after the girl as if a love goddess incarnate had appeared to him. All the nerves in his body seemed to send him one strong message?perhaps it was lust. He could not take his eyes off of her.

When she and the young man went into Eden, he followed them as if on a leash and did not stop until they sat down at a table. He stood at a distance and looked at her like a hungry predator. Suddenly she glanced at him.

She smiled at the young man who sat across from her and said something. Then, she stood up and walked over to John: "Do we know each other?" she had said. He looked at her distractedly: "No, I don't think so?"

He became a bit perplexed; she smiled and looked him over. Then he said: "Excuse me, I was thinking about something." She smiled again, went back to her companion and sat down. Two weeks later, Violet had moved in with John, and a while after that, they were married.
