Just a few days after they met, John took Violet to see his father at the Smithy.
"You have to meet Dad," he had said to Violet. "I know he's going to like you."
And so it was. Director Stein greeted the girl and looked her over. At first it was not easy to see what he thought, but about the time they were leaving the Director's office, it was clear that John was right because when Violet started to move, glance down and smile, the old man had melted like butter.
After paying their visit to the Director of the Reykjavik Iron Smithy, they went to the Director's home so John's mother could meet Violet. When they came in the door, the wife was on the phone, talking to the Director.
"God help me," the woman said raising her hands, "has the lad lost his mind completely."
They had gotten into the living room. The lady held the receiver and looked at the guests. Then she said into the receiver: "We'll see. I'll talk to you later," and hung up. She looked back and forth between John and Violet, smiled at them braced herself and said: "John, you might have let me know so I needn't stand here like a fool and poorly dressed."
After John had introduced the women, they went into the large living room and sat down. John's mother looked Violet over and said: "I didn't know you were so young."
Violet smiled and John followed her words and gestures when she said: "I'm not young, I'm just me." It was exactly the same with John's mother as his father. She fell immediately for the appearance and behavior of this woman whom John planned to marry.
