It has not yet been mentioned how John persuaded Violet to marry him. There were some preliminaries.

Two days after John met Violet in Hveragerdi, he had called her up to invite her out for dinner and a play afterward. Violet thought this was extremely funny. She called Solla friend to tell her about this slightly cracked chap. Solla friend listened to her and tried to get some information out of her. The only problem was that Violet knew little about the guy. She had nearly forgotten what had happened at the greenhouse-restaurant, but after the call she had started to think it over.

The next day John came up in a classy American car to pick up Violet. They planned to dine at Hotel Holt and go afterward to the National Theatre. John honked and Violet ran out of the house. She was in a blue coat and high heels. Underneath she wore a wide, white gown. John jumped out of the car and opened her door. She slipped into the front seat, and he immediately felt a strong fragrance of perfume assault his senses. She smiled, and he was as gentle as a lamb. Then they drove off, and Violet's parents, Gudrun Rose and Simon Sörenson, stood at the window and watched them disappear down the street.
