One day Solla friend called up Violet and suggested they go see the psychic healer, Brandur Brandsson, who was advertising family counseling and relaxation. When they had told Brandur Brandsson about the problem, he sent them away, saying that Violet should bring John, and that Solla friend had nothing to do with the matter.

Ordinarily John would have refused, but because the matter was a sensitive one, and he himself had few solutions, he agreed to go with Violet to see Brandur Brandsson.

Brandur, the psychic healer, was forty-ish, but looked much younger. He had a tall build and a fair face with thin, wispy hair.

When John and Violet came, Brandur was wearing wide pants with a white shirt hanging loose over them. Before they went to the appointment, John had promised Violet to be courteous and put aside all prejudices.

They sat on a sofa in front of Brandur Brandsson who had placed himself on a high chair and looked them over.

"Am I correct," started Brandur Brandsson, "that you're having trouble with your sex life?"

    John nodded in agreement.

"Am I correct," he continued in a soft voice, "that that roots lie in the wife's frigidity?" John looked at Violet who answered the question affirmatively.

Before John could say anything, Brandur Brandsson stood up and said: "If you are interested in solving this problem, it's best for Madame Violet to come alone next time." He then bid them farewell with a handshake and walked into a side room.

Violet came alone next time. She sat on the sofa, and Brandur Brandsson sat on the chair in front of her. Violet was calm and contemplative and waited for the psychic healer to speak, but that took some time. Finally Brandur Brandsson stepped off the chair, went to a small sink far back in the room and washed his hands. He dried his hands on a towel which he laid down neatly and went back over to Violet. He looked at her as if he were reading something in her expression. Then he sat down on the chair, rested his feet on one of its lower rungs and began to speak: "Man is by nature selfish. All men are by nature selfish. You also, Madame Violet, you are selfish."

He spoke slowly, and his words went into her ears like a message from on high. He continued: "Man is selfish because he is born in a body; the body grows, waxes strong, deteriorates and dies."

Brandur Brandsson paused in his oration, then began again: "Men are all mammals, you also, Madame Violet, you are a mammal; your mother, Madame Violet, is a mammal; we all are." Violet sat still on the sofa, and it was not possible to discern any expression on her face.

The psychic healer continued: "All mammals have something in common: they want to multiply. Sexual energy is the strongest life-force in us. Sexual energy, which also resides in your body, Madame Violet, is the strongest life-force that you have. This same life-force, sexual energy, resides in my body, in the body of your husband, John, in your mother's body and your father's, in everyone's body, in all mammals."

Now the psychic healer stepped off his chair and stood before Violet. He extended his hand: "Stand up," he said, and Violet stood up, and he took her hands. He looked right into her eyes and said: "All mammals make rules for themselves?rules of life. Some rules of life are linked to religious beliefs in one way or another. A couple's married life and their children's upbringing are based on rules of life."

The psychic healer smiled now for the first time since he had started talking: "You understand my words, Madame Violet, don't you?"

She nodded to indicate she did. "I think so," she said in a low voice.

"This will be enough for the time being," said Brandur Brandsson, "until we meet again in two days." He smiled at Violet again and walked into the back room.
