As mentioned before, Director Stein was a many-talented man and man of the house. After he hired Bertha as his personal secretary, various things got out of hand. Or, so it seemed to Madame Sigrid.

Director Stein, on the other hand, found it difficult to understand his wife when she complained that he was unusually heedful of the personal secretary's various interests.

Through the years it had become more or less customary for Director Stein to come home for afternoon coffee. He usually brought along one or two acquaintances or friends. These coffee breaks at the Director's home were completely special. They were actually highly cultivated discussions in the spirit of the turn of the century, although the topics of discussion, of course, had changed somewhat. The topics then had included religious issues, miracles, dreams and mysticism, strange people and, in fact, everything imaginable.

Some guests came again and again. But just after Stein hired Bertha as personal secretary, he started to bring her to afternoon coffee.

It was a complete change for Director Stein to bring a woman home for coffee. Up till then it had always been men.

Madame Sigrid saw immediately that there was no lack of discussion topics?not at all. There they sat and chatted?not about equipment units and business?not at all?but about spiritualism, miracles, death, nature's beauty, clean air and physical conditioning.

When they left, Madame Sigrid was sure wondering what they were talking about when they came to the office.
