Although Steina was not very tall, she was energetic and always asking questions. It will not, then, surprise anyone that she would have worked it out, sooner or later, that her brother Paul and Laura were messing around. Steina had gotten some insight into sex in her Sex Education class at school and knew enough about it to conclude that Paul and Laura were doing something of the kind. Steina had worked out that Paul and Laura went at it most when no one was at home. She had discovered that through organized spying. One day she had a logical suspicion that something would happen. The only problem was that it was not possible to know in advance where they would be. Sometimes they were in Paul's room, and sometimes up in Laura's room. Steina had also found out that it was best to spy in Laura's room. There was a large built-in clothes closet; she planned to hide there and see for herself what was going on.
Then it happened. She got lucky. She had gotten into the closet without Paul or Laura knowing she was in the house. She, in fact, had to wait nearly an hour before Laura came into the room. She could watch her through a crack in the closet, and she did not have to fear that anyone would open the closet at this time of day.
Laura was picking up around the bed. Then she sat down before the mirror and started to comb her hair and smooth cream on her face. After a while she stood up and began to undress. She took off everything, and Steina, surprised and excited, looked at this big girl. Finally Laura turned out the light, lay down in bed and pulled the coverlet over her.
After the light was out, little could be seen, but it was possible to hear all the more. Steina did not have to wait long, because the door opened, and although it was dark, she saw someone come in; she knew it was Paul. He went over to the bed and got in with Laura.
This was exciting. Steina had opened the closet door to hear what was going on. But there was little to hear. They did not talk. Then came a low creak from the bed. Little by little Steina's eyes adapted to the dark so that she could see better what was happening. She thought something was up, and when they let the coverlet slide to the floor, she could see clearly what they were doing. Paul lay on top of her, and they moved, and the bed creaked.
Although Steina was only seven, she knew very well what they were doing. She found it exciting, but realized the matter's larger context. She had decided what she was going to do. She squeezed out of the closet and crawled up to the foot of the bed. Then she stood up, moved closer and slapped her brother's rump, shouting: "Gotcha, nah!" Then she ran out like a shot down the stairs and outside.
Laura actually had spotted Steina before she attacked, but it was at a very sensitive moment, so she had not said anything. For Paul it was different. He reacted gruffly, jumped out of the bed and called after his sister: "Your ass is grass!"
The next day, Paul succeeded in cornering his sister. She was scared out of her wits and did not know what he would do. She was surprised, however, how calm he seemed?not mad at all.
"Steina dear. That wasn't very nice. I who have always been good to you, given you candy, birthday and Christmas presents. Why'd you do it?"
Steina was not usually caught speechless, and she gave a good account of her actions.
"I just wanted to see. We learn about this in school, and it's in movies and on TV. But I promise not to tell."
After Paul had discussed the matter with his sister, he was convinced that Steina would not blab.
