The same day Speedy Simon came over and wanted to speak to Violet. By then Paul had already spoken to her.
Speedy Simon sat in Violet's room.
"You know, Violet, that I can't help myself. This is my curse, it's a disease. Really nothing much happened; I barely touched the girl."
The conversation was brief, and Violet felt no need to scold her father. She recalled the time she had come home from staying on a farm, the summer she turned ten. That was during the years that Speedy Simon had triumphed in the field of sports. Violet had gone into the company work shop to say hello to her father. She wore an ankle-length, thin wool skirt and blouse.
"You look smashing, girl." Then he embraced her, kissed her on the mouth and pinched her rear.
"You're becoming a woman, girl. What have you been up to out in the country!"
Violet sensed then that her father was acting, it seemed to her, not normally.
