When Paul and Steina came in, Violet was alone, picking up in the living room. She knew immediately what they wanted.

"Let's go up to the office," she said, and they went silently into the little library that John used when he worked at home. Violet locked the door and sat down:

"I know what happened. Now, I want to hear the details." She directed her words to Steina who looked at her brother and then back to her mother. Then, she repeated what she had told Paul earlier that day.

"I've remained silent way too long," said Violet.

    The children listened.

"I think he's sick," said Violet.

Paul shook his head, disapprovingly: "This is not sickness; it's insanity."

"It makes no difference what we call it," said Violet.

"And what do you intend to do; are you going to let him get away with this?"

"We're talking about my father, here, and your grandfather."

Paul had stood up and was very worried: "I know that Dad will kill him."

"Yes, I'm afraid something will happen if he finds out about this."

Paul looked hard at his mother: "Of course he will find out about this. Anything else is unthinkable."

Violet wrapped her arms around Steina and squeezed her: "Dear Steina, I admire you."
