Later in the evening John visited Rev. Pauline. He told her what had happened to Steina and Violet. Rev. Pauline listened, and John had to follow her out to the kitchen while he spoke. She started to make coffee, and she had not said a word even when John stopped talking. She brought the coffee into the living room, put some candy in a dish, some cookies on a plate and tots of cognac into crystal glasses. John was silent, knowing that Rev. Pauline would address the issue when she was ready. They had begun to sip the coffee and the cognac. Rev. Pauline crossed her arms and looked at John: "That's some bomb you've dropped."

John kept quiet, waiting for more reaction.

"The man is raving mad. I'm completely flabbergasted. Poor Violet. And little Steina. Yes, it's best to be a big-mouth. Steina doesn't put up with any nonsense." There was a brief silence. Then she continued: "John, we have to talk to Violet. John, we have to examine this matter deeply?all the way to the bottom." She looked sympathetically at her friend: "My dear John, I think I can read your thoughts."
