LONDON (Reuters) – God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.

In "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

Hawking, 68, who won global recognition with his 1988 book "A Brief History of Time," an account of the origins of the universe, is renowned for his work on black holes, cosmology and quantum gravity .

Since 1974, the scientist has worked on marrying the two cornerstones of modern physics -- Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which concerns gravity and large-scale phenomena, and quantum theory, which covers subatomic particles.

His latest comments suggest he has broken away from previous views he has expressed on religion. Previously, he wrote that the laws of physics meant it was simply not necessary to believe that God had intervened in the Big Bang.

He wrote in A Brief History ... "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we should know the mind of God."

In his latest book, he said the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting another star other than the Sun helped deconstruct the view of the father of physics Isaac Newton that the universe could not have arisen out of chaos but was created by God.

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass, far less remarkable, and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes.

Hawking, who is only able to speak through a computer-generated voice synthesizer, has a neuro muscular dystrophy that has progressed over the years and left him almost completely paralyzed.

He began suffering the disease in his early 20s but went on to establish himself as one of the world's leading scientific authorities, and has also made guest appearances in "Star Trek" and the cartoons "Futurama" and "The Simpsons."

Last year he announced he was stepping down as Cambridge University's Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a position once held by Newton and one he had held since 1979.

"The Grand Design" is due to go on sale next week.

How does order come from chaos? Put a watch in a bag, take a hammer to it a few times, compress it really hard, and then throw open the bag. What are the odds, honestly, of all those parts coming back together into a unit that will function and keep the time perfectly.

How can one look at Earth, let along the universe, and say it's all from nothing, that it was an accident and it just happens to function perfectly for mankind to survive?

it is unbelievable a man as smart as he is does not believe in God. i hope he finds God before he dies. it would be sad if he did not go to heaven.

  • My Hawking need him some Jesus & to be introduced to God & Jesus & The Holy Bible which no man can argue, I'm yet praying for the man it's no wonder God hates physicist & astrologers & speaks about the dislikes of them in the Bible.

Explaining how the universe started through a series of threaded assumptions, probabilities, and models is exactly that: assumptions, probabilities, and models; all absolutely prone to human error and limited to his/her experiences.

Interesting stuff though, definitely an extremely intelligent guy and "A Brief History" was really well explained.

Not sure why people want to bash various religions in the comments of these articles. What a waste.
  • I believe in GOD, but i also believe in evolution. Evolution is all around you and you see it everyday. I dont know how you can consider yourself an intelligent human being and not realize that evolution is real. But in the same breath i know and feel that GOD is real too. Still trying to figure it out.
  • Psalm 53:1 "The fool has said in his heart there is no God." Or perhaps Job 21:22 "Shall any teach God knowledge, seeing it is he who judges the proud."
Sadly, the man as most of humanity suffers from Spiritual/Disconnect and needs prayers said for him. God is LOVE and for all Hawking's education he still can't recognize it. No one but no one who truly knows, not believes but knows God through a personal developed relationship, (not a religious 'lucky charm' I go to the church, mosque or temple once a week nonsense) should fault Mr. Hawking but rather acknowledge his findings of where he is in his spiritual evolution and pray for him. Rejoice and be glad that his 'findings' show he is indeed searching for the ultimate answer, the Great Unknown (Wanna Tonka) Hope I spelled that right but it is what certain Native Americans called God.
As 1 Corinthians 13:8 states: "Love never fails, but prophecies will, ...tongues shall cease...whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish."
So congrads Mr. Hawking I'll be praying that you one day find the greatest love of all that is within you, God. 1 Corinthians 3:16 "Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?"
The biggest problem today is what I have called the Spiritual/Disconnect where people claim to "believe" in God but have no real relationship with Him. If they did they wouldn't be shooting Hawking down and would not use words like "believe" but rather KNOW. As Einstein said; "You only KNOW through EXPERIENCE."
Thank you for taking time to read my comments, BE PEACE!

ok. firstly. I am 16 and I believe in God. chances are you will discredit what i have to say for those reasons alone. i would not blaim you. but hear me out for a minute. Have you ever loved someone so much that you would be willing to do anything for them. Have you ever loved someone to the point where if they hated you with all their heart you would still love them? that is why I believe in God. people may say "oh i dont believe god exists because if he is all powerfull he could just bring everyone to heaven and take away all the sin in the world. GOD FORGIVES YOU OF YOUR SIN. all you gotta do is repent. now repent sounds like an intimidating word. it is. it intimidates me, because i want to sin, you want to sin, its a FACT of life. everyone sins, but God is willing to forgive. And I find it more probable for there to be a big dude outside of all that we know who told us about him and LOVES us, then all these people who are incredibly inteligent who are trying to stretch everything we know to fit their agenda. I am going to buy his book and see what he thinks. it all comes down to love. unconditional love. and all you christians on this thread. thanks for taking time to comment. love ya all. Peace.

Alright, can the almighty tell me where I will die so I don't go near the place? I'm gonna go with Hawking on this one, even though civics and phonics are way beyond me. My mom used to tell me I could find missing stuff,I just wasn't looking hard enough. I didn't necessarily believe her.Maybe god can smite my best friend when he is standing next to me. I can't look much harder for him/her. My eyes are getting old.

Simple science question for either side,

First i will start by saying it is unwise to bash either side, so i will not. Nothing is accomplished in such a manner. That being said, We have observed for the past 170 years that the sun is decreasing in size at approximately 5 feet per hour. This is observable, repeatable, constant, science. Understand that this has never been observed otherwise for 170 years since it's observation began. This is the interesting fact. If we now hit the stop button and reverse the process by adding 5 feet per hour, lets just say to the time of the dinosaurs( according to the geological column), At 5 feet per hour added to the year of the "terrible lizards" the sun would acutually be touching the earth. This is SCIENCE! science must be observable and repeatable. Therefore the earth cannot be as old as stated by evolution standards because of what is observed. No one observed the origin of the universe, therefore we are not talking scientifically, we are talking philosophically. These are Both faith based propositions.

Now, please understand this is one simple observation for a young earth. There are many that would simply not fit in this comment section.

The simple laws of science will not allow something to come from nothing, second law of thermodynamics states (in layman terms) everything is in the process of running down, or degeneration
Evolution says that everything is going in the opposite direction from observable, repeatable science.

Biogenesis, proven by Mr. L Pasture, Life only arises from life, it is impossible to get life from non-living matter. So, How when no life existed, did life become, since it is scientifically impossible?

You see the problem with the two theories is this. Science disproves evolution all the time. No-one has ever disproved God. And these are the only two options you can possibly have....

P.S. Evolution does not = natural selection. Natural selection is basic science, a bird having a longer beek than another is not Macro evolution, it is change within a species and is still a bird. It never evolved into something greater.
