The Alton (Illinois) Evening Telegraph reported in Sept 1946 that when its normally busy obituary writer Mildred West-she reported an average of 10 deaths a week-took a week's holiday, the people of Alton obligingly stopped dying. Once back on the job the death rate of ten or so a week immediately resumed.
Le Victim
In Nov 1991 the Guardian told the story of Mr. Alain Basseux and his misadventure on an English road. The Frenchman who had worked in Wiggington near York was cut up at a roundabout and lost his temper. He overtook the offending vehicle then lurked in a lay-bay until it passed him whereupon he gave chase and forced it over to the side of the road. Leaping from his car Basseux ran to the other vehicle forced its door open and grabbed the driver by his shirt front. -Do that again and you're dead, he roared. Then he recognized the man he was accosting: his boss. His counsel told the magistrate in so many words that B. behaviour was the French way-at least until he found himself assaulting his boss. His mood then became one of 'fear , trepidation and fright'. The Guardian said that B. did not lose his job which must have had something to do with the English way.
