Dr Ira Progoff, in his book Jung, Synchronicity and Human Destiny (1973) tells the following story: One day a stranger came to Abraham Lincoln with a barel full of odds and ends. He said that he was in need of money and that he would be much obliged if Lincoln would help him out by giving him a dollar for the barrel. The contents he said were not of much value; they were some old newspapers and things of that sort. But the stranger needed the dollar very badly...

Lincoln with his characteristic kindness gave the man a dollar, even though he could not imagine any use that he would have for its contents. Some time later, when he went to clear out the barrel, he found that it contained almost a complete edition of Blackstone's Commentaries. It was the chance, or synchronistic, acquisition of these books that enabled L to become a lawyer and eventually embark on a career in politics.

    Healing Message

In the late 1970s Canon Christopher Pilkington of Bristol and his wife Pat set up a healing clinic with a volunteer staff. It had not been going long when one of its most successful volunteers, Penny Brohn, found she had breast cancer.

Because there was nowhere in Britain which offered the kind of alternative cancer treatment she wanted, Brohn an acupuncturist, paid out a great deal of money to go to such a clinic in Germany.

After 9 weeks, Pat Pilkington went to visit Brohn and found her in good shape both physically and mentally, if not financially. During the visit the 2 women discussed the possibility of setting up this sort of clinic in Britain and before the visit was over they had decided to do so. B insisted that it would have to be properly supervised by a medical doctor, one who was familiar with and sympathetic to alternative approaches to medicine. But the women wondered how would they go about finding such a doctor?

The problem was uppermost in Pat's mind as she flew home to Britain. A large pile of letters was waiting for her at her Bristol home and without taking her coat off she opened one of them at random. It was from a clergyman friend asking if, by any chance she could help a Plymouth hospital consultant, Dr Alex Forbes, who was looking for a small centre where he could try out his alternative ideas of medicine.

    - I literally screamed at the ceiling, Pat recalled, I was in the grip of something very strange at that moment.

The new clinic opened in Oct 1980, with Dr Forbes as its head.
