    José Silva is the creator of Mind Control, a widely acclaimed self-improvement programme which teaches people to use their minds at a deeper and more effective level-even while they are asleep-and which boasts more than 1 million users throughout the world. Silva tells of a coincidence which helped him to develop an important part of his course, the usefulness of dreams in problem-solving.

    He relates that in 1949 he had been grappling for some time with the problem of whether or not dreams could serve a useful purpose when he was awoken by one: -It was not a series of events like most dreams, but simply a light...very bright. He opened and shut his eyes several times in the dark room and every time he closed them the light returned. About the third or fourth time, he saw 3 numbers: 3-4-3. Then another set of numbers: 3-7-3. The numbers returned several more times.

    He lay awake for the rest of the night trying to figure out if the numbers had a meaning-a telephone number, an address, a license number-but failed to make sense of them. The next day, just before he was to close his electronics shop, a friend dropped in and suggested they go for a coffee. His wife asked if, since he was going out, would he go over to the Mexican side of the border (Silva lives in the Texas border town of Laredo) and buy her some rubbing alcohol, as it was cheaper across the border.

    On the way he was telling his friend about the dream when it occurred to him that, maybe, what he had seen was a lottery ticket number. They stopped at a store and bought the alcohol. As the salesman wrapped it, the friend called from another part of the store: -What was that number you were looking for? 3-7-3,3-4-3, said Silva.

    His friend told Silva to join him.

    - There was a half ticket with 3-4-3 on it, writes Silva. Throughout the Republic of Mexico, each of the hundreds of thousands of vendors, like this little store, receives tickets with thousand of vendors, like this little store, receives tickets with the same first three numbers every month. This store was the only one in the entire nation which sold number 3-4-3. The number 3-7-3 was sold in Mexico City.

    A few weeks later Silva learned his half of the first lottery ticket he had bought had won $10000, which he sorely needed. -As elated as I was, I looked this gift horse carefully in the mouth and what I found was more valuable by far than the gift itself. It was foundation for a solidly based conviction that my studies were worthwhile. Somehow I had made contact with a Higher Intelligence.

    Maybe I had made contact with it many times before and not known; this time I knew.

    - Consider the number of seemingly chance events that led to this. In a moment of despair, I dreamed of a number in so startling a way...that I had to recall it. Then a friend dropped in to invite me for coffee and , tired as I was, I accepted. My wife came by and asked me to bring rubbing alcohol, which led me to the only place in Mexico where that particular ticket was on sale.

    Silva adds: -We have no objection to the word 'coincidence' in Mind Control; in fact, we attach special meaning to it. When a series of events that is hard to explain leads to a constructive result, we call it coincidence.

    When they lead to a destructive result, we call it accident. In Mind Control we learn to trigger coincidences. 'Just a coincidence', is a phrase we do not use.
