On July 15 began under the supervision of the SSS and ROAH a new office,

which main purpose was getting and distributing employment for the handicapped on Sudurnes with Olafur Thor Eiriksson as its only employee.

Our journalist interviewed Olaf:

"This is some kind of an experiment.

We've secured financing until the end of this year to run this office.

Until now an employee of the Regional Office in Kopavogur has had this job on his hands in a part time job.

But he has neither had the time nor means to do his job properly.

Have you had many visits since you began?

I'm afraid not.

What do you think is the reason?

The most probable reason is the lack of publicity and people don´t realize its existance.

But these days I'm mailing introduction-letters to every employer on Sudurnes.

I will also introduce the office to all members of Sjalfsbjorg in our area.

The need for this kind of an office is quite obvious.

Everyone must have some role in the build-up of our mutual society, because if you aren't allowed to intervene with others you'll feel neglected.

The disabled aren't fit for every job?

It varies of course, just as among those who aren't disabled.

Homo sapiens has great adoptability and is able to take new jobs his whole life, we're learning as long as we live.

Your last words?

I know that some of our brothers and sisters have received negative replies,when they've been applying for jobs, and have for that reason accepted compensation.

Disabled people who have been enjoying compensation from the state will not stop receiving those, until they've been employed for a year.

If they'll quit their job later, they will receive their compensation again, no problem.

The general salary is of course considerably higher than the compensation, besides what satisfaction one usually gets from knowing that one is of some use.
