Nearly 300 People on the Sušurnes on Wellfare The Job-Seeking and -Distributing Office (JSDO) started ...
work last summer under the administration of the Communities' Union (SSS).
JSDO's employee is Olafur Thor Eiriksson, whose office is at Hafnargata 80 in Keflavik.
The office is open between 9-11 am. and the telephone-number is 2362.
Baejarbot asked him a few questions.
-Why did this special office for the disabled come about?
This is an experiment supposed to last until the end of the year.
The Regional Office had a single employee, stationed in Gardabaer, who was supposed to cover the whole peninsula of Reykjanes, but it was too great a task for him, so that the administration decided to try having another employee on the Sudurnes.
-Who can you assist finding a job?
Everybody who because of some disability, eg. back-pain finds him or herself unfit for any kind of work.
How many people are there, who are disabled and/or on compensation on the Sudurnes?
The latest numbers aren't at my hand, but on May
It was devided this way:
125 in Keflavik, 21 in Grindavik, 27 in Njardvik, 4 in Hafnir, 16 in Sandgerdi, 15 in Gardur and 7 in Vogar.
-Do you have any knowledge on how many of them have suitable jobs?
No, I'm afraid nobody has, because there has never been any study made.
-Have these people been showing your office much interest?
Yes, I must say that I'm quite pleased with the number of inquireries, and it's growing.
-Where is the employment situation best?
In Keflavik, because of its size and variety in employment opportunities.
In all the other towns and villages everything revolves around the sea and what it gives, and when people have lost their ability to work like those who aren“t disabled in any way there isn't any job to be had.
-Are there any plans of starting a preserved workshop?
That matter has been discussed, and among other ideas the building of a green-house in Svartsengi, where disabled people could work, has come up.But still there haven't been any decisions made.
-Are you pleased with your job?
Yes, because in Keflavik everyone, who has visited me has been employed somewhere.
But there is a great lack of opportunities here in Grindavik and therefore a number of people are still on my list, were Olaf's last words.
