MANGALORE, India (AFP) – Some of the eight survivors who crawled or were carried from the burning remains of a plane that crashed in India on Saturday told of their escape amid scenes of horror and death.
Officials said 158 of the 166 passengers and crew aboard the plane died when it overshot the runaway and plunged down a steep slope when coming in to land near the southern city of Mangalore on a flight from Dubai.
"The plane veered off toward some trees on the side and then the cabin filled with smoke," Umer Farooq, his face covered in burn cream, told the NDTV news channel at a local hospital.

Do you really want to be the new "war president"? If you go to West Point tomorrow night (Tuesday, 8pm) and announce that you are increasing, rather than withdrawing, the troops in Afghanistan, you are the new war president. Pure and simple. And with that you will do the worst possible thing you could do -- destroy the hopes and dreams so many millions have placed in you. With just one speech tomorrow night you will turn a multitude of young people who were the backbone of your campaign into disillusioned cynics. You will teach them what they've always heard is true -- that all politicians are alike. I simply can't believe you're about to do what they say you are going to do. Please say it isn't so.

Travelling in India
Hi Olafur,
Mike and I have made it safe to India. It was a little
tough being so cramped in an Air Plane for 15 and
a half hours.. but we are here!
We first landed in Mumbai, which was well... a REALLY
busy place, we were able to catch up on a small bit
of sleep, then the following morning we caught a plane
on an Indian airline called KingFisher airlines to
Cochin India.
COCHIN IS A VERY BEAUTIFUL AREA but at
the same time still very different :D
I know this email is not much about what we are up
to relative to making money, but it is an integral step
in the re launch of GVO and Hotconference.com
Plus, I do consider our clients more like family so I
like updating you on what we are doing relative to
EVERYTHING.
I have put a photo gallery filled with hundreds of
pictures that I will be sure to update daily for those
of you who are interested. I have also shot alot
of video but uploading it to the internet from here is
a bit slow..
I'm used to our GIG E pipe at the data center in Texas

Nothing like it has ever happened. The President of the United States, the elected representative of the people, has just told the head of General Motors -- a company that's spent more years at #1 on the Fortune 500 list than anyone else -- "You're fired!"
I simply can't believe it. This stunning, unprecedented action has left me speechless for the past two days. I keep saying, "Did Obama really fire the chairman of General Motors? Who among us is not at a loss for words? Tears pour out. Tears of joy. Tears of relief. A stunning, whopping landslide of hope in a time of deep despair.
In a nation that was founded on genocide and then built on the backs of slaves, it was an unexpected moment, shocking in its simplicity: Barack Obama, a good man, a black man, said he would bring change to Washington, and the majority of the country liked that idea. The racists were present throughout the campaign and in the voting booth. But they are no longer the majority, and we will see their flame of hate fizzle out in our lifetime.

Young King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the monarch of a neighboring kingdom. The monarch could have killed him but was moved by Arthur's youthful happiness. So he offered him freedom, as long as he could answer a very difficult question. Arthur, would have a year to figure out the answer. If, after a year, he still had no answer, he would be killed.
The question was: What do women really want? Such a question would have perplexed even the most knowledgeable man, and, to young Arthur, it seemed an impossible query. Since it was better than death, however, he accepted the monarch's proposition to have an answer by year's end.
He returned to his kingdom and began to poll everybody; the princess, the prostitutes, priests, the wise men, and the court jester. In all, he spoke with everyone but no one could give him a satisfactory answer. What most people did tell him was to consult the old witch, as only she would know the answer. The price would be high as the witch was famous for the exorbitant prices she charged.
