It¡¯s the third week of August and already some of my friends on Facebook are talking about their kids going back to school. It struck me as weird because I don¡¯t have my summer vacation until next week. My kids start school the following week. Seems those times of school starting after Labor Day (3 weeks away) are long gone.

Here at the Space Telescope Science Institute we are recovering from a whirlwind summer commissioning the new and repaired instruments on Hubble. Our public unveiling last Wednesday was a rocking success, judging from the reactions: the Internet was abuzz with comments, and tens of millions of you were hungry to see the images and get your hands on them. The network here at the Institute was considerably slower than normal on Wednesday and Thursday ¡ª not that we minded, as we all knew the reason why!

On September 10, 2009, in the evening, the Hubble Space Telescope obtained its 900,000th exposure since its launch in April 1990!
Not all, of course, were exposures of celestial objects (some were taken for calibration purposes), but still, think about it for a moment ¡ª Hubble has created an album of hundreds of thousands of images of the universe. I am reminded of the words of the American poet Jean Toomer, who wrote once:
I have always argued that no person is truly irreplaceable. I still believe that to be the case. However, my colleague and friend Rodger Doxsey came probably as close as anyone ever could to being irreplaceable. I know of no one who had a deeper and more thorough understanding of the workings of the Hubble Space Telescope than Rodger. Rodger passed away on October 13, 2009, at the age of 62.

Almost every weekend I try to go to a few bookstores, to see if there is anything new that I might find interesting. (My wife is not that happy with this habit, since I often end up buying a few books.)

I am Massimo Stiavelli, an astrophysicist at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). I am the STScI Project Scientist for Hubble¡¯s successor, the James Webb Space Telescope. I came to the institute in 1995, and before working on Webb, I worked on all of Hubble¡¯s cameras.
Engineers dressed from head to toe to avoid contaminating the Webb mirror pieces with unwanted particles are reflected in the mirror segments.
The James Webb Space Telescope, Hubble¡¯s successor, is an infrared telescope. Warm materials glow in the infrared, and for this reason Webb optics have to be kept cold ¡ª all the way down to 40 Kelvin (or -233C or -388 F). Unfortunately, our technology doesn¡¯t allow us to polish mirrors while working at 40K. Thus, the conundrum for Webb was that the mirrors had to be polished at ordinary temperatures but still had to be the right shape at 40K. When temperatures change so dramatically, mirrors warp and deform.

For Austrian-born Michael Eisenriegler, it was a real-life adventure.
The 40-year-old amateur archaeologist was in the Gobi over the weekend, helping to unearth Buddhist relics that had been buried for more than seven decades in a remote part of Mongolia.
Less than an hour of digging revealed two crates filled with priceless treasure, including rare manuscripts, Buddhist statues and clothing.
The relics were once part of a much larger cache of artwork housed at Khamaryn monastery, located 450 kilometres (280 miles) southeast of the capital, Ulan Bator.
A dry-weather peril
The nature of the Australian environment - long periods of dry, hot weather and volatile natural vegetation - makes many parts of the country particularly vulnerable to fire. Southeastern Australia has the reputation of being one of the three most fire-prone areas in the world, along with southern California and southern France. The Black Friday fires in 1939 in Victoria, Ash Wednesday (1983) in Victoria and South Australia, and the 1967 fires in Tasmania, have each killed in excess of 60 Australians. They loom as dark shadows in the consciousness of residents of these states on summer days when strong northerlies, extreme heat, and low humidity follow a long dry period. Throughout the 20th Century, many other fires have claimed lives, destroyed people’s homes and livelihoods, and reduced thousands of hectares of forest to charcoal and ash.

Named after the dragons of Chinese mythology, Leafy seadragons (Phycodurus eques) resemble a piece of drifting seaweed as they float in the seaweed-filled water. The Leafy seadragon, with green, orange and gold hues along its body, is covered with leaf-like appendages, making it remarkably camouflaged. Only the fluttering of tiny fins or the moving of an independently swiveling eye, reveals its presence.
A massive prehistoric sea reptile that was longer than a humpback whale and had teeth the size of cucumbers has been found by fossil hunters on a remote Arctic island. (See pictures of the "sea monster.")
Measuring some 50 feet (15 meters) in length, the bone-crunching predator represents one of the largest marine reptiles ever known, according to a team led by Jørn Hurum of the Natural History Museum in Oslo, Norway.
The people of much of the Himalayas, including the Sherpas, Tibetans, Bhutanese, Nepalese and Sikkimese have many myths about the Yeti. There are many different stories and tales about the creature, and some aspects are placed even into the religious practices of some groups. Indeed in some villages of Nepal some people even in the 1990s, still had animal sacrifices to the "Snowman" before hunts.

As if strange symbols appearing on the ground aren't intriguing enough, how about "body symbols"?
Lee Walsh, UFO investigator from Damariscotta, Maine, has in her files a number of reports from New York, Massachusetts, Maine and some Canadian Provinces in which people describe symbols left on their bodies after encounters with UFOs.
The earliest report, from New York State, was in 1976.

We've all heard about the Loch Ness Monster, which is the granddaddy of all modern monster legends. But is there really something going on in that Loch (Lake) in Scotland? Nobody knows for sure, but there are unique circumstances here that certainly warrant further investigation, including the unusual configuration of the land and the lake itself, the long history of sightings from reliable sources that number up to ten thousand, and the fact that strange and undiscovered creatures most definitely do exist and occasionally come to light as we become more technologically advanced. "Nessie" is the most renowned occurrence in the area, but what not many people are aware of is that ALL the lochs in the area have histories of sightings of strange creatures.

Sightings of a large ape/man creature have been reported for thousands of years from every corner of the globe - and the similarities in the physical descriptions of the animal are amazingly similar.
"Poltergeist" is a German term for "noisy spirit".... which is an excellent description for this frightening phenomena.
This kind of paranormal activity has made many victims literally run for their lives, completely abandoning their homes and possessions!
What is even more frightening is that Poltergeist activity is relatively commonplace.
As living, energy-emitting, spiritual creatures, there is essentially no doubt that we all have a personal aura that can be seen and possibly photographed.
Religious photographs depicting a supernatural glow around the subject are classic examples of the existence and the importance of our own personal auras, and every life form has an aura - be it human, animal, or plant.
Each person's aura is uniquely individual, much like a fingerprint, and interpretation of the fluctuations in intensity and color can give us meaningful insight into the thoughts, feelings, and even the health of ourselves or those around us.
Understanding how to see and interpret the auras around ourselves, our families, our friends and associates, and even our pets can help give us valuable insight into the thoughts, emotions, and even physical health of these important entities in our lives.
